The day of the big move had come and we were in for a LOAD of surprises! See, I planned this move to make it as easy as possible as we were doing all the work ourselves to stay in budget, but I should have really accounted that NOTHING goes to plan.
I rented a Storage Container from Go Mini’s Portable Storage that was dropped off at our old house a week prior the move which allowed me to load our stuff in at a much slower pace. There was no way I could do pretty much all of it myself in a day or two. On top of it, I had to fit my MASSIVE workbench in! It would not have been possible to get up a ramp to a truck. Even better, after they dropped the bin off at the new house, we would be able to take our time over 3 more weeks to unload everything.
Benefits of using storage containers
- You pay for it by the month, at a reasonable rate, especially in comparison to a moving company
- The rate includes the pick-up and delivery to the new location (or for them to store it)
- Convenient and easy, allowing you to take extra time loading/unloading at your pace
You can read my review of Go Mini Storage at the bottom of this post
Now, the container only fit around 75% of our stuff (Yes, even with my amazing Tetris packing skills), so we still needed a U-Haul for the last of it. I could have gotten a second container, but I had only enough space in the driveway for one, barely! I’m so glad that would not ever be an issue at the new place. I can’t complain too much about that though, the alternative of just have a truck to move it all is not something I even want to think about, especially with the move being at the end of November.
The Real Fun Begins
The real fun began however, when we got to the new place. Here I was, after ensuring the house we were leaving was clean and perfectly ready for the new owners to move right in, to get to our new house…. with rooms still full of furniture!
Here is some of what was left behind:
- All the bedrooms had beds and dressers
- There was a fish tank full of fish
- A nasty old couch in the basement
- A MILLION plants and knickknacks throughout the house
- Massive and heavy cabinets
- Plants GALORE!
- And so much more
This derailed our plans and we had to unload most of the U-Hauls stuff into the Double Car garage and the workshop as the U-Haul was due back. Then the next few days were spent scrubbing, and maneuvering all of their items around. We had to make room for not only some our stuff we placed in the garage, but we still had the container to unload. The city wouldn’t be able to come until the beginning of January to pick up the large items they left. If it wasn’t winter, we could have placed it all the “garbage” outside and made it so much easier. So, as you can see, not the easy move that I planned.
It’s now been almost 5 months since that fun moving day and honestly, I am still not even fully unpacked (mostly by choice of saving the repacking during renovations). I have to say, it really makes you wonder why you couldn’t purge more during the move if you can live without it no problem for this long. Still, we have done quite a bit of work already on the place, but are definitely behind in our renovation schedule due to some setbacks, but I can already see a huge difference some of the work has made!

My Review of Go Mini’s Portable Storage (St. Catherine’s) – I have not been asked, nor am I benefiting on giving this review.
Ordering Process– The lady I spoke with on the phone was great in answer all my questions on how it worked
Drop off/Pick Up – Having to be there to sign for the bin, they were there exactly when they said, and the gentleman was Super Polite and Considerate. He made sure to drop it exactly where I wanted, and took care to protect my property. It was the same guy picking the full bin up and delivering it to the new house. He made sure to double check with me where I wanted it placed at the new house.
The Unit – Clean and Spacious. It is the largest unit I could find. Interior dimensions actually had more space than their competitors, AND they were a better price on top of it.
Overall – I highly recommend them and would certainly use them again (hopefully I don’t have to though)
